christmas spirit, I’m in a blogging mood

by samantha on December 16, 2006

We finally got our tree today. We would have went last weekend, but I was a tad hung over. Who am I kidding? That doesn’t even describe it actually. Hanging your head out the door on the side of a major highway while being driven home, praying that the world would stop spinning long enough for you not to get puke in your hair… is not a lit-tle hung over, that’s everyone-talks about-you-the-next-day hung over. Ugh.

Mike insists on buying a real tree year every year. I think it’s about one of the only happy childhood memories for him; I think they’re gorgeous even though I really hate the thought of a tree being cut down for the sole purpose of being put on display in my living room for 2 weeks as it’s sitting there dying. But yes, I indulge; for my husband’s sake.
Our day includes driving throughout the country side in search of the perfect tree stand selling the perfect trees, for the perfect price. Needless to say, if we’re lucky this only lasts about half the day. I couldn’t believe when he settled on the first stop this year. I didn’t push, I agreed with everything and we were on our way home in record time!

So the tree is in my living room, awaiting the perfect time to install the lights and decorations. I believe it needs to “fall” first; to make sure that the branches are down instead of up. Who would have thought there was a science to putting up a tree? Apparently there is.
So this evening we will dress the tree together, as a family. I think this will actually be humourous; me chasing Carter from under the tree, stopping the cat from chewing on the branches or drinking from the reservoir underneath, and then the dog chasing the cat behind the tree. Never fails.
I am interested to see how Carter will react to the tree this year. This is his first Christmas that he will somewhat “get it”. Being that he’s 16 months now and into everything I can only imagine the havoc he is going to wreak on the this defenseless tree.

What away to go if you ask me. Ripped from your home, put on display, then tossed at the side of the road to be taken away and made into wood chips. Poor friggin’ tree.

I watched Christmas Vacation last night, well, half of it before I fell asleep. I think that’s one of my absolute favourite Christmas movies. My two newest favourites are Elf (with Will Farrell) and The Polar Express (with Tom Hanks). Those are two wonderful and festive movies. I think they have both helped me get into the spirit of Christmas despite the lack of snow that we have. I saw a guy outside in a t-shirt today. WTF is that!? I cannot believe this weather. Yes, I am still talking about the weather. Sunny and warm today. I. don’t. get. it. I really don’t.
