ultimate sugar cookies

by samantha on December 16, 2006

We had a goodie exchange at work this Friday. I was baking on Thursday night getting ready. I definitely put Martha Stewart to shame. The sugar cookies I made were fabulous. I think I’ve eaten about 20 of them so far. Seriously, they’re that good. So in light of the Christmas holidays, I thought I would share. Don’t say I never gave you nothin’. Merry Christmas! Eat and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 pound confectioners’ sugar
  • 5 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter flavored extract

DIRECTIONS

  1. Using an electric mixer, cream together butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until light and fluffy. In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Blend well. Chill dough for 2 hours.
  2. Roll dough out on lightly floured board about 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes.
  3. Bake on ungreased pans at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 4 to 6 minutes. Remove cookies from pan and cool on wire racks.
  4. Using electric mixer, beat shortening, confectioners sugar, water, salt, vanilla extract, and butter flavoring until fluffy. Frost cookies.

Yum, yum!
