I was walking down the road today, enjoying this extremely fucked up weather. I didn’t have a coat on either. Fucked I tell you. Anyway, so walking down the street… there it was. Something I hadn’t seen in years, I was a little shocked, perturbed and disgusted maybe even. I wasn’t sure what to make of it actually. Know what it was? A public drinking fountain! The push the button and drink kinda fountain. I haven’t seen one in years, and even longer since I thought about using one. Drinking fountains. Yuck. Imagine the infestation of disgustingness on one of those things. Blech.
It’s funny to think of the things that we used to consider “the norm”. Riding in the car with no belts on. I remember the days that we used to stand, dance, jump in the backseat. My mom used to swing her arm back and forth screaming at us trying to grab something, anything. We would huddle in the furthest corner so that we weren’t the one grabbed by the ankled and hauled to a seated position. All while driving. I am in awe of that my mother was able to do to us while she was driving.
We used to ride our Big Wheels into the night throughout the subdivision. I remember there was a boundary of a major intersection and the train tracks and we could play anywhere within that boundary. All day and all night if we wanted. No worries. The shit we used to get into. *sigh* Not anymore though. Carter won’t be out of my sight for a looong time. I’ll keep him in one of those leather harnesses until he’s ten.
One other thing that I thought about when I happened upon the drinking fountain… telephone booths. When’s the last time you saw one of those things? There one down the street from me. I see one everyday, but never anyone using it. Another yuck. I don’t even really like borrowing someone’s cell phone… a phone booth. Not for me.
Tell me, what are some things that you used to think of as “the norm” and haven’t thought about it in years… I wanna know!
