July 2nd, 2008
This morning started out as any other day. I was up with Hudson nursing just as MIke was leaving for work. He got up at his normal time and banged about in the kitchen making his lunch - just like normal.
Then this normal day strayed. Strayed like never before.
Mike called at 7:45am, just as I was dozing back to sleep before having to get Carter up and ready for daycare.
He QUIT his job.
QUIT!
In case you’re unaware we have a newborn baby and I am on Maternity Leave until May 2009. I receive only a small portion of my pay as compensation from the government while I’m off work and it’s, by no means, enough to carry this family.
Without having a backup plan he just walked off the job this morning; and even though he’s already out pounding the pavement and making calls, I am fuckin’ pissed / scared / worried that he would take such drastic action without consulting me. Without a fuckin’ plan!!
Holy shit. Talk about stress! I realize that things were beginning to suck and jobs in the construction industry are a dime a dozen but the least he could have done was line SOMETHING up before burning the bridge.
He’s always been a very emotional, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kinda person but when there is a family, children, a house, and OTHER LIVES involved it’s a little more drastic then being a bachelor and only having to provide for yourself.
I am so pissed that he would make this kind of decision without me: such and emotional decision with grave consequences should something not come up - BY TOMORROW!
I think I’m gonna barf.
** UPDATE:
It’s been an ongoing saga of work hours, overtime, signing off on apprenticeship hours and so on. I guess that Mike requested one of his supervisors to sign off on his apprenticeship hours but the guy made excuses why he couldn’t even though he had done it for others. Then a different supervisor put in his hours for last week lower then what he had actually worked and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Instead of talking it out like a rational person woman would do, he just left.
I understand about hating your job and wanting to leave. I really do. But he really couldn’t have picked a WORSE time to do it. Sometimes hating work is better then not having it.
On the upside, he has an interveiw in the morning with another construction company. Let’s just hope there’s not a huge decrease in pay because with me off we’re just getting by with what his pay was.

OMG! I would have a nervous breakdown.

My husband did something liek this when I was eight months pregnant with our second child. I was in the same boat, worried scared, sick to my stomach about it, but it all came down to how unhappy he was where he was working. He was bringing that stress home and it was beginning to be bad for us, as a couple, and as a family.
Hubs took the first crap job he could find after that, while still pounding the pavement for a better one. he ended up working in four different places int he next two weeks before being hired where he works now.(he has worked at this place now for six years)
Chin up sweetie.

Oh my gosh…I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about it FOR you! I understand being fed up to the point of wanting to quit - I’m at that point with my job. But as much as I’d like to, I can’t just walk out in a blaze of glory, taking the goldfish with me. I think that’s the difference between men and women. Women think ahead, and Men just HAVE heads - but rarely use them.

Holy crap. This is big. I’m so sorry Mike has been so unhappy because that BITES.
You will figure out a way to get through this. And in the meantime, remember that his “emotional, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants” personality is one of the reasons you love him.
Take care. Vent anytime. Good luck

Oh, sweetie…
(((((HUG)))))
My husband quit his job when I was three months pregnant with #3… I remember the horrible feeling I had when he came home and told me the news. I actually had to sit down on the floor, to keep from falling down, it was such a shock.
It’s been nearly five years since then, and he has started his own business… It’s been hard work, but I’m so proud of him, and he’s finally doing what he loves.
Sometimes these transitional events come about at exactly the wrong time, there’s no doubt about it. They are seriously challenging, and incredibly stressful. But you know what? They can also be opportunities for positive change.
I know it doesn’t feel like it right now… I remember. But have faith, Sam. I’m sure it’s going to turn out to be okay.
Take good care. Thinking of you!

Geez, I am so sorry to hear about this, and I hope something turns up for him/you all soon. I know that’s a hell of a burden for you to have to deal with at a time when you should be as relaxed and happy as possible. Something will come through soon!

Oh hon..I’m so sorry!! That is crazy!! He obviously wasn’t thinking about how he’s going to provide for his family of 4.
Bob is really disliking his job currently also…but I don’t think anything would make him quit without something else in the works. That’s just crazy!!! I’m so sorry.

What is that saying: when one door closes another opens.
I’ll keep him in my thoughts and pray he finds something quick. But I completely understand considering how the US economy is in dire straights and the California construction industry has been hardest hit–meaning us.
